Cuenca (Ecuador)

After a 8hr bus ride that was one of the worst on our trip so far (smelly, hot, bumpy, noisy and packed wıth locals jammed in the aisle so close to you that you could feel their breath on your neck!) we arrived in Cuenca. In the south of Ecuador and the country's third largest city, Cuenca is a pretty town set on a river with lots of large well maintained plazas, narrow cobblestone streets, and beautiful colonial architecture.

The bad weather we experienced in Banos seemed to follow us south - it rained every day here, meaning we couldn't do some of the things we'd planned to (like visit the nearby national park). So, as in Banos, we simply enjoyed the atmosphere of the city - visiting the art gallery, people watching in the pretty plazas, seeing the flower market, and enjoying a few of the cute cafes. We also visited a famous Panama hat shop called Barrancos where we watched them make these beautifully fine-weaved hats, before leaving with a couple of our own!
