Banos (Ecuador)

After the Quilotoa Loop we headed a few hours south to Banos, a lovely little town surrounded by mountains. We almost didn't make it here however, due to a nearby active volcano which began erupting the previous week and almost caused the town to be evacuated after showering it with ash.

Banos is famous for Melcocha (which you'll see in the photos below) - a chewy taffy which tastes a bit like toffee. Makers stretch it from wooden pegs in doorways around the town, then pull off a small piece for passers-by to purchase.

We had planned to do a couple of walks and explore the scenery surrounding Banos but a lot of rain during our 2 days here curtailed those plans. So instead we spent time soaking in the local thermal baths and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of this pleasant little town.

Ps. Yes those are Guinea Pigs roasting in the photo below! (a not unusual sight in Ecuador)
